Hosted email service is simply a dedicated mail server platform that's shared out to domain owners. Unlike shared web hosting, which also offers email services, hosted email services are fine tuned for email only. Our hosted email platform uses much more aggressive filtering than we could provide on a shared web hosting platform. It also makes use of a very sophisticated mail relay system, to give your mail the best chance of being delivered to the recipient. In addition, we provide more email specific tools, such as much more robust webmail services like Crossbox, that add groupware functionality.
In most cases, no. All of our web hosting plans include email with every domain added to your hosting plan. However, there are a few reasons why you might look at our hosted mail plans. First, your storage quota for email is shared with all other storage for hosting. So if you use a lot of storage for your mail accounts, it can quickly eat up your hosting space. You may also want to split the mail out for other reasons. Another reason may be that you just want email, and no web hosting associated with it.
Finally, it is important to note that our hosted email plans are different than the email provided with our web hosting plans. While they both make use of DirectAdmin provided resources, our hosted email plans have much different configurations and use completely different mail relay architecture. Additionally, there are different webmail clients available with it, that are quite nice.
See the previous answer, but yes you can, and in some cases should. The email provided with our web hosting accounts will work fine for most cases. Email is a complicated technology. With the amount of spammers out there now, it becomes more and more difficult to have your mail delivered reliably. Sent mail is always considered "best effort", as it's completely out of your hands once your mail server makes the call to the receiving end. There are many factors that could cause it to be rejected, get marked as spam, or greylisted. Our dedicated mail hosting plans help mitigate these potential problems through the use of very extensive filtering, and maintaining clean IP Reputation across a very large pool of IP addresses used as mail relays. The shared web hosting services do not have this capability (though they may some day).
That's somewhat complicated to answer, but mostly a hard no. If your recipient list is small, say under 100 people, and the list is double opt-in, than yes. But really, this sort of mail really needs to go through a dedicated bulk mail provider. We have hourly rate limiting in place, and your account will be suspended just as fast as you hit that send button, if you try to test this. If you've read anything on this page, you'll notice the term IP Reputation a lot. This is one of the most important aspects of mail delivery. Read more in the next FAQ.
IP Reputation is really part of a 2 part package called Sender Reputation, that also includes Domain Reputation. It is literally a reputation score assigned to an IP address that sends mail. There are a lot of factors that go into this score, but suffice to say, a low score means that your email will not be delivered to your recipients, especially on any major ESP (Email Service Provider) like Google, Yahoo, or Outlook. The things that most impact sender reputation are, spam complaints, mail bounce rates, and unsubscribes. Basically, are you sending email that people don't want? When dealing with shared services such as email, this means that any one user can impact the entire domain(s), server, and IP(s) used for sending mail. As a service provider, it's our responsibility to keep our IP Reputation clean. We have a zero tolerance policy when it comes to spam. Just don't even try it here. You will be suspended, and or terminated without refund.
As a domain owner, and sender of mail on said domain, you control your domain reputation. It is your responsibility to keep your reputation as high as you can. Google Postmaster Tools, is a great place to start, being that they are one of the largest ESP's out there. We have a hard limit of 300 outbound messages an hour (and in turn 7200 messages a day) on all accounts, regardless of their size. The Starter plan is further limited to just 100 outbound messages per day, as it's intended for personal use, and that's a lot of email writing per day! If you reach this send quota, your outbound mail will be suspended for the remainder of that hour. This also triggers an alert, and it will be investigated. If you aren't regularly approaching this limit, you should be fine. However, if you're found to be sending what even remotely looks like unsolicited email, your account will be suspended immediately. We're serious here, spammers are not welcome! Note that we're not looking at the content of your email. There are certain signatures and bounce rates that make it very clear that mail is being sent unsolicited.
The only other limits are your storage quotas, which are on a per account basis, not per address or domain. Your quota is shared across all of your domains and email addresses.
Webmail has really come a long way in the past 2 decades that we've been in the hosting business. We offer 3 different clients with our hosted mail plans. They each have their own merits, which we'll leave to you to decide which is "best" for you.
Also note, you don't have to use webmail at all. Our services work with any mail client on your desktop or mobile device.
With the exception of the Starter plan. we don't limit the number of domains or addresses in our email plans. You can add as many as you like, as long as you stay within your plan's quotas. As long as you have space, go for it. Just remember that you're responsible for your overall quota, so don't add more than you can handle, or all of your addresses will become unusable if you go over your allotted storage quota.
