First full post in markdown!

As part of the massive overhaul we recently underwent, one of the biggest changes was switching from a mostly static PHP site, to a fully static HTML site. My main reason for this was simply speed and simplicity. I don’t love dealing with PHP. It serves a purpose, but more times than not, a page would end up being 95% HTML and 5% PHP. So it ends up just being wasteful. As I was doing this, the thought occurred to me that I didn’t want the blog being a separate entity anymore. The last site redesign we did, I hacked together a basic header and footer, and called it a day. The sites were never really integrated other than a link from the main site to the blog, and the fact that my lazy header basically forced you back to the main site, because there were no real links to other WordPress pages. At first I was going to attempt to make a full theme for WP to match the site. I got about an hour into it, and things were looking good. That is until I got to my massive menu. Trying to rebuild that in WP would’ve been...

Well, that took longer than planned...

So it’s now been a month since my last post. At that time, I had fully intended to be migrating our billing system within a week or so. I had already evaluated a few platforms, and had settled on one. However, as the week progressed, I found more and more issues, and grew more and more frustrated with it. While the dev team was responsive, and seemed genuinely interested in the problems I presented, there was no real sense of urgency to address them. There just ended up being a whole lot of shortcomings that I would have to work around, starting with the migration itself. After a few test runs, and a few hacks to try and address things, it was looking like a ton of work would be required just to get everything working enough to “flip the switch”.

Time Flies, or How I Really Need To Post More

Has it really been nearly 8 years since my last post? Hard to remember what a crazy time that was with Heartbleed. I really need to be better about cross posting things that go out via email or other methods, that are of public interest. So much has happened since then. Time gets away from you pretty quickly. Especially these past 2 years with all the craziness of the pandemic. We have a lot going on here at serve-you.net, so this will be the first post of at least 2 in the very near future.

Heartbleed and you

By now I’m sure that you’ve all heard about the Heartbleed bug in some form. This is a very severe bug that affects just about everything that you do online that involves SSL. The short explanation is that there was a bug in OpenSSL, which is the piece of software used by most systems on the web to create the encryption keys used to “sign” certificates and other secure transmissions. The bug allows for an attacker to read information stored in memory directly on the server you are communicating with. This means passwords and other critical information could potentially be exposed on unpatched servers. We have updated our OpenSSL software and recreated our keys, and reissued our SSL certificate for our users site. Our other services are not affected by this since they use a different version of the OpenSSL libraries that were not vulnerable to this bug. While we have no reason to believe that any passwords were compromised since this bug was made public, we strongly recommend that you change your passwords here and elsewhere on the internet for added security. This would be a good time to rethink your password strategy as well if you are still...

The Importance Of Offsite Backups

I’m pretty active in the hosting community, and one of the things I see way too often is people losing all of their data due to some sort of issue at their web host. The first reaction they (and sympathizers) have is to lash out at the host for whatever the issue was that caused the data loss. In many cases the host is in fact at fault of shoddy practices themselves, however the ultimate responsibility of maintaining data integrity lies with you, the owner of that data. In fact, most hosting provider specifically state in their Terms Of Service that any backups that they make are for their use only, and you should not depend on them for restoration purposes. Can you really argue that the data was irreplaceable, and yet you made no effort to back it up to a safe place yourself? Sometimes things go horribly wrong. You owe it to yourself to be prepared.

10 years!

I can’t believe I let this pass by without so much as a word, but we’ve officially been in business for 10 years as of May! As most of you know, I started this business because I had numerous friends and family members looking for affordable hosting, at a time when it was very hard to come by. Since I had already been running my own servers for a couple of years for the various domains we own, people would come to me for help. At first I just gave friends space on my own servers. But at a time when disk space and bandwidth were still pretty pricey, I just couldn’t afford to do it for free anymore. So serve-you.net was born.

Scheduled Maintenance 12/31/2009 - 01/03/2010

serve-you.net will be performing a server migration for all shared hosting customers beginning at 8:00PM EST Thursday 12/31/2009. This migration is a bit more complex than any previous migrtations, as we have decided to switch from using Plesk to cPanel. While we will make every attempt to minimize downtime during this migration, there will be times that services may be inaccessible. We expect the migration to complete sometime overnight 12/31 - 01/01. We are scheduling this maintenance window through the weekend, as a precautions for any lingering issues that need to be addressed. We are very excited about this migration, as we think that cPanel will offer you a much more robust hosting environment. We will be sending out an email with some of the features, as well as links to documentation omce the migration is complete. Happy new year!

Password Security

Do you practice good password policies? It’s so easy to fall into the habit of using the same password everywhere you need one. Worse, we often use simple passwords that are far too easy to guess, or crack. So what do you do to make a password that’s easy enough to remember, but difficult to guess/crack? Not only that, but use a different password on every site, server, and application?

SPAM, It's not just for dinner!

I love technology. I am continually amazed by new technology, and I am constantly immersed in it. In fact, this was one of the main reasons that I started serve-you.net all those years back. Being that I am so involved in technology, my entire life now seems to be digital. If you are anything like me, email has nearly replaced snail mail for everything except packages. Just about the only things I get in the mail these days are bills and junk. It’s pretty easy to toss the junk in the recycle bin, or trash can. What about email? What is this SPAM, and what can we do about it?

What is "overselling", and what does it mean for you?

In the hosting industry, you will see this term come up a lot in one form or another. Overselling, Oversold, etc. Or the opposite Undersold, non-oversold, etc. We even use it on our about us statement. So what does it really mean?

SSL Security

Do you value your private information? Sure, we all do. But how much do you take security for granted when browsing the web? I was just reading an article on the register about a new man-in-the-middle attack on SSL, and it made me wonder how much people actually pay attention to what they are doing online.

W3C Standards Compliance

We are currently working on getting all of our pages as close to W3C standards as possible. As a good portion of serve-you.net was coded before xhtml was established as a standard, there’s a lot of changing code from uppercase to lowercase, and closing tags. Having said that, it’s taking quite a while to do this. If you happen to run across any errors, or pages that just don’t look right, please do let us know!

New Affiliate Program

At serve-you.net, we know how important word of mouth is to our business. In fact, the only reason we ever got into this business in the first place, was because we had so many friends and family looking for hosting and design services. We have always had some kind of referral plan in place, but it has usually been an informal one. Now, we are pleased to announce our new serve-you.net affiliate program. How it works: Head on over to the users site and click on the affiliates link. Sign into your account. Join the program. Place the link code with our without image on your site, in emails, or wherever else you wish to promote us. When a user clicks on your link, a cookie is used to keep your code associated with their visit. The cookie is good for 90 days. So if they don’t buy today, but come back say a month later to buy, you will still get the referral! For each sign up that we receive from your code, you will get 10% of the total sale. We will automatically deposit $1.00 in to your account to get you started. Payouts start at $10, and...

Updated Pricing and Plans

We just launched our slightly redesigned website. We’ll call it serve-you.net v3.5, since the overall design elements are the same, it just has a bit more flair. The biggest change you will find is updated pricing on all of our products. Hosting now starts at just $5.95 per month with our Silver Shared Hosting Plan. Managed VPS Hosting now starts at just $29.95 per month for our Ruby VPS. Both Shared & VPS plans are even cheaper when paid annually. We have also lowered prices on Domain Registration with as low as $9.95 per year, and Thawte SSL Certificates starting at just $59.95! As always, our existing customers were automatically upgraded to the new pricing structure. We are one of the only hosts in the industry that pass new plans on to existing customers. You would normally have to cancel and signup for a new plan.
